Letters, account book, and legal documents of William Chamberlayne, a landholder and merchant of "Poplar Grove," New Kent County, Va. Letters to his wife Margaret (Wilkinson) Chamberlayne concern the burning of Washington, D.C., in August 1814, and his service in the War of 1812 under General John Pegram. The "Poplar Grove" account book concerns the sale of dry-goods and products milled presumably at Obediah's Mill, owned by Chamberlayne. Also included in the account book are entries for dates and amounts of crops planted, records of horse breeding, and accounts concerning cockfighting. Of special interest is a 1766 deed of Thomas Bullitt and Andrew and Thomas Lewis concerning 300 acres of land in Augusta County, Va., and the establishment of the first bathing facilities at Warm Springs, Bath County, Va.
